Where, and who, are the wild things? It’s a conundrum that absorbs popular culture, and a contradictory one at that. On the one hand we’re presented with dangerous mythical beasts, and on the other lies landscaped gardens in which White Queens call court. Light versus dark, so-to speak.
Lela Jacobs Winter 2011 collection, This Crooked Way, expresses this intricate balance, and how we, as complicated individuals are affected by it. “I like to keep people guessing, and the words provoke a story book or film feel for the imagination to play with. This crooked way is my way; unpredictable, imperfect, rebellious but happy. This crooked way is also a choice. You do it straight or you take a stroll down the crooked path and meet some new ideas,” Jacobs notes.
These concepts manifest in each piece of the collection. Contrasting black and whites present themselves in androgynous oversized draping, merino, fur, and leather proffer the naturalistic elements This Crooked Way suggests, while cropped jackets with high-neck collars enforce traditional garb. And apparently, historical references play a significant role: “The hand-loomed poncho is suggestive of Mexico (and made from NZ Possum, merino and cotton) and the uncut goats hide has a Mongolian feel.” It also has this old English doctor feel to it as well, with the bag, the hat and the long tailored coat.”
The poncho was hand loomed by textile designer Harry Gyde, one of the unique creative’s who collaborate with Jacobs every season. “I really try to get people involved, and it makes them happy to see their skills being used for something special like this. There are a lot of skilled people out there twiddling their thumbs.”
Those collaborators are set to have their work cut out. This Crooked Way is Jacob’s strongest collection to date; a fully realized melding of intellectual concepts with the quality design and craftsmanship her eponymous brand has become synonymous with. “This is a special one for me, and I feel I have really stepped up in confidence of design. It’s romantic, personal and timeless. I want people to feel like they are investing in something beautiful, not disposable.”
If you go down to the woods in 2011, you will probably find a stylish, This Crooked Way-dressed cult, and you will probably want to join it.
