-----------------------------------------------....................................... .INTERVIEW WITH OLIVIER HENRY
Vue Privée

Could you introduce yourself?
I am a 39 yo French guy whom arrived to Singapore 13 years ago with a travel bag, a camera, and big dreams. Photography was and still is my passion, and I had just decided that I would make a living of it.

What is Vue Privée?
Vue Privée is beyond an art gallery. It is a refuge for like-minded people. It is a brand that that was born from my love for photography and for art in general. It is my selfish dream to new and emerging artists by giving them a platform to exhibit their talents alongside more the more established ones. And if is also one of our missions to empower a new "breed" of collectors by democratizing the world of fine art, by allowing them to have access to museum quality artworks at more accessible price-points. Of course, we also have the works at the higher end of the price scale for the seasoned collectors.

How do you feel being in Singapore for a project like this one?
It is the perfect place to be in. Asia is definitely the continent of choice now for many different reasons. Singapore is at the crossroads of many Asian countries, its art scene is growing at a steady and diligent speed, English is the spoken language, and it is above all an amazing
place to build a business. Let's not forget the food!

Are you trying to promote artist from Singapore or there is a space for international artist too?
We are here to democratize the world of fine arts. We of course focus on Singaporean and Asian artists, but we can only be relevant by putting them alongside artists from other continents and cultures. Check out our website, www.vueprivee.com, and you will see what I mean.
We live in a global world where boundaries and space demarkations are thinning constantly; our online presence is going to be one of our main focuses in the next year. Working with artists from all over the world just makes pure sense.

Could you explain how is the process of artist selection?
There are quite a few factors that come into play. But, let's resume them down to the 2 main factors. First, the artist and works must trigger a "coup de coeur" within the team; a strong first impression is crucial for us if we want to promote an artist's works with passion. The second rule is that the works may not convey any sense of obvious violence, torture, misery, war, pain, or suffering. We have enough of the news to remind us on a daily basis of what goes wrong in the world. I believe that every object, every art piece contains an energy, whether positive or negative; and I want our audience to live with art that brings into their life the positive side, not he opposite.

How do you strives to offer alternative views to traditional concepts of photography?
By expanding the definition of photography per se. In a world of multimedia, mixed arts, and the digital, one has to adapt. Photography means "writing or painting with light"; it is not only represented by a print hanged on the wall anymore. We work with artists who are simply inspired by a photograph but whom would express it through a painting; or some other artists, whom are not photographers, would you use photography as tool of expression, just the same way they may use clay or a paint brush.

Could you talk about the Collection Vue Privée?, what are your intentions with this collection?
So far, it is a "small" collection of about 10,000 historical original images, starting from the birth of photography until about the early 50's. We have beautiful daguerrotypes, amazing family albums from the 1870's, Japanese Geisha hand painted albumens from the same period, etc. We feel that historical photography is extremely undervalued and, sadly, not many collect it. I know this will change. In the long term, our goal is to build a collection that represents whom we are as a brand. We want to invest in the artists we work with and, who knows, maybe have our own museum one day. Dreams, dreams… they keep us going!

How do you help new collectors to learn more about collecting art and/or photography?
Knowledge is power. We organize talks with artists at the gallery. We introduce them to artists and works they have never seen before. With our online platform being one of our main focus, we are going to be active in sharing our expertise with fun information downloadable booklets, and of course our blog. We have also a videos area in our website which we wish to use to communicate and share that knowledge.

What kind of items can we find in your shop and how is the way to get visible in this shop for an artist?
We have 2 shops which mirror each other: the physical space and the virtual space. The Singapore gallery is one of the most centrally located galleries in Singapore, smack down in the heart of town. Everything that is featured in that physical space is then featured online for the world to admire, and hopefully buy. We believe that "Art is a Lifestyle" and that it should not be limited to hanging works on the wall. We aim to expand our portfolio of collaborations with artists with works that people can actually live with and use. We are in the process of expanding that part of the business, one step at a time. We are only 1.5 years old, with big dreams and goals… The future is exciting to us with so many projects yet to develop.

Could you tell us a bit more about the Vp editions?
Think… museum quality art pieces, exclusive to Vue Privée only, created by working closely with the wonderful emerging and established artists we believe in and love.
And, of course, all limited, numbered, certified, and signed. Last, but not least, accessible for purchase from anywhere in the world from www.vueprivee.com
