-------------------------------------------------------------------------...........Ulrike Tschabitzer-Handler

CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND EDITOR IN CHIEF OF UNIT F

It is amazing how this event is progressing in the fashion and photography scene, joining two disciplines that has reach a good relationship during all this years. Ulrike Tschabitzer give us a few details of this great event.

Could you introduce yourself?

My name is Ulrike Tschabitzer-Handler and I am the creative director and editor-in chief of the Vienna- based fashion platform Unit F büro für mode.

How did your career unfold?

I have been working as a freelance curator in the fields of fashion, art, architecture, photography and new media since 1992. Over the years I managed to build up an impressive network of creative minds in Vienna and also abroad. In 1999 I co-curated the fashion exhibition fast forward – fashion in the media of the 1990s at Vienna Künstlerhaus, featuring installations by design greats such as Viktor & Rolf, Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons, Hussein Chalayan and Raf Simons.
I have also taught courses on the presentation of fashion at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

How did you get involved with the Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography?

In 2000 I founded Unit F büro für mode together with Andreas Oberkanins, Unit F’s managing director, and Andreas Bergbaur, who is now head of PR and Marketing at Jil Sander. Together with Andreas Oberkanins I created the concept for the festival for fashion & photography. We started in 2006, and it has since grown and grown.

How does initially the idea of UnitF, Festival for Fashion & Photography  comes up?

Ever since the start of Unit F in 2000 we have annually given the AFA-Austria Fashion Awards to Austrian fashion designers. During the first few years we held the award ceremony in the basement of our office space – for invited guests only. As the local fashion crowd grew bigger and bigger we launched the format of the Austrian Fashion Week. However, we considered the concept of the Fashion Week too restrictive and not appropriate for the conditions in Vienna. At the international fashion weeks in Paris, Milan etc. you have designers giving individual runway shows and showrooms for international buyers and press, which we didn’t have. Therefore we conceived the festival for fashion & photography as a fashion platform for Austrian designers with an international orientation.

As Creative Director at UnitF, Festival for Fashion & Photography what are your responsibilities?

I am responsible for the creative direction of Unit F as a whole. For the festival for fashion & photography I develop the programme and also oversee things like the festival campaign shooting or the publications accompanying the festival as editor-in-chief.

What is the biggest challenge that you have faced during your career at Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography?

To motivate companies from the private economy to invest in contemporary Austrian fashion design. Obviously the high quality of the festival costs a lot of money and only a very small part is covered by public funding. So at Unit F we spend more time than we should running after the money.

What are the biggest challenges facing your organisation?

Attempting to create transparency for the things that we do.

Could you tell us a little bit about the creation process you go through when putting together fashion and photography?

The festival consists of 5 constant pillars: fashion shows, photography, the business of fashion industry talks, shopping tours and the guerilla store. We usually start with the programming in September the year before. In weekly meetings with the whole team we discuss currently relevant aspects in fashion and try to integrate them in the festival. For me fashion & photography go hand in hand, hence the name. The festival combines these two aspects acting as a visualisation platform.

Describe your ideal entry level candidate for the Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography

Every designer, photographer etc. is either selected by an international jury or invited by us to present their work at the festival for fashion & photography. So there really is no defined entry level.

As the Creative Director at Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography it means you head up a very creative group. Can you tell us what it's like to lead this group of individuals?

It is a very inspiring process because without a great team, no company can survive.  As creative director I have to be able to completely rely on my staff. I am very fortunate to be working with a highly committed team.

You have worked with a lot of photographers and fashion designers over the years.  Have you found any particular qualities that make for a good photographer or designer? or in other words, What do you think defines a good fashion designer or a good photographer?

I don’t think it is possible to talk about fashion designers or photographers in terms of good and bad, it is always about your individual approach. We, for one, concentrate on contemporary fashion design that is artistically relevant and trying to bring fashion further. Which of course, as you know, isn’t the commercially most successful form of fashion design.

What makes Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography different than other Festivals of this type?

The variety of different disciplines involved.

Is there anything in particular that really impresses you when looking through CV’s and Resumés? What can be done to improve young designers and photographers chances?

What always impresses me, and what I feel is crucial, is international experience.

How would you say Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography  has been for the fashion industry?

That is a difficult question to answer…
Well, at Unit F, and with our festival format, we have developed strategies to support Austrian designers along their way towards internationalisation. We have shown that Austrian fashion design post-Helmut Lang is definitely something worth watching out for. The success of designers such as Peter Pilotto, Ute Ploier, Petar Petrov, Wendy&Jim and ___fabrics interseason proves that.

What can we expect from the next Unit F, Festival for Fashion & Photography?

We are currently in the process of putting the programme together and getting potential sponsors on board. Next year we are celebrating two anniversaries – ten years of Unit F, and five years of festival for fashion & photography. So, rest assured, we have something really special up our sleeve.

Are you optimistic about the future of UnitF, Festival for Fashion & Photography?

Sure, If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be doing it.
