--------------------------------------------------------------------.INTERVIEW WITH Tristan Hoare Gallery
"Different countries have developed a strong photographic tradition and interest. For me the most interesting would be Japan, Germany, France and America."

Tristan Hoare studied History of Art at Edinburgh University. Following an internship at the Louvre, he spent four years at Christie's Auctioneers, both London and Paris. During this time he worked in a variety of departments including 18th century French Furniture, Old Masters, Impressionist and Contemporary art, before focusing on photography. After leaving Christie's, Tristan worked for different galleries before setting up his own company advising clients and curating mixed exhibitions.

Please, could you introduce yourself?
My name is Tristan Hoare and I am running the gallery in partnership with French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte.

Could you tell us how this project started? What is the project’s main focus? Also, who is behind this project?
Julien Dobbs-Higginson a curator friend of mine showed me the book The Ruins of Detroit, which I though was an amazing body of work. I loved the images, the book and the way the artists had gone about their work. It involved many trips to Detroit and 5 years of research and work. Together we contacted the artists and suggested a show.
The focus of the exhibition is to tell the story of Detroit and show the series of amazing photographs. The exhibition is very relevant today for obvious reasons.

What photographers are you involved with?
We exhibit a wide variety of photographers from a classic, more documentary style to more contemporary photography.

What kind of requirement needs a photographer to be in your gallery?
We are looking for photographers with original ideas, integrity and a clear sense of what they are trying to achieve. Even if it is difficult to put it into words.

Could you explain the process of artist selection?
From my side, once I have found the criteria I described in the previous question, it is really up to the artist to choose the gallery.

Are you working with established names or do you have space for new talents?
Both.

Why did you focus on photography and how do you see photography nowadays as a medium of Art?
I chose photography because it was an area in which I felt I could tell what was good.
Today there are many new photographers and unlike many art medias it has many possibilities.

What would you say are the best spots not to loose? Or in other words what would you say are the best spots in the international panorama about photography?
Different countries have developed a strong photographic tradition and interest. For me the most interesting would be Japan, Germany, France and America.

What kind of photography are you interested in?
Original photography.

What are your next steps?
To develop a more contemporary photography programme.

the gallery wilmotte gallery at lichfield studios
Formerly a car garage the building was purchased by the Earl of Lichfield in 1984, where he designed and built a state of the art photographic studio. One of the great photographers of his generation, he used the studio to photograph Royals, celebrities and friends and was awarded fellowships of both the British Institute of Professional Photographers and the Royal Photographic Society. Jean Michele Wilmotte converted the building into an office and an exhibition space, keeping many of the original features.
