Noovo release ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From January 29 to April 5, 2014, Galerie des Galeries opens its doors to talented fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard. A former prizewinner of the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyčres and a future artistic partner of the European Capital of Culture project in the city of Mons in 2015, he has fashioned the TILL WE DROP exhibition in his
own image: quirky and socially conscious.

For his first solo exhibition in Paris, Jean-Paul invites visitors to explore his creative process. Drawing from the identically titled 2014 collection, shown in September of 2013 in Paris, this exhibition evokes the exuberance of life at Mexico’s giant Mayan Riviera hotels and expresses the artist’s take on this artificial paradise, a world steeped in euphoria,
sin and freedom. Dressed as a bee and using a series of installations, Jean-Paul Lespagnard takes us down a guided tour of the rituals and customs of impulse tourism, freed from all material contingencies.

As prolific designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard exhibits his work at Galeries Lafayette, several visuals from his TILL WE DROP project will be displayed in store windows on the rue de la Chaussée d’Antin as well as the store’s first upper floor.

Sporting a broad smile and flanked by his two gigantic “Jacquelines”, Jean-Paul Lespagnard greets the audience of his fashion show at
Hyčres’s 23rd International Festival of Fashion and Photography. The crowd is ecstatic, swaying to the soundtrack chosen by Lespagnard to match this visual extravaganza. The excitement was not just for show: Jean-Paul won two awards at the event.

At the time of the festival, back in 2008, Jean-Paul was not even 30
years old but could already boast an array of experiences that honed his personality and style. As a child in Ličge, he used his truck driver dad’s tires to make corsets for his sisters. Curious about all things and fascinated by art history (especially surrealism, an iconic movement in Belgium), he studied Fine Art. His love of all forms of art is a major influence in both his life and work as a fashion designer, but by no
means the only one.

In the same conversation, Jean-Paul brings up his fascination with amusement parks (which he has always visited avidly), choreographer Meg Stuart or artist Wim Delvoye, the author of one of his tattoos. Further down on the same arm, another tattoo depicts a lobster in a paper cone
full of fries : the elegant crustacean bathes in the oily fast food staple –
an image highly symbolic of the designer’s taste for playing with
extremes. His collection themes always rely on the commingling of the unexpected. Basketball and the 1920’s, Dutch fishermen and moto-cross, and so on. Jean-Paul Lespagnard is, at heart, a baroque stylist, a lover of contrasts whose artistic references range from sport, tourism and folk culture to classical music to pop music to religion. Adding to Jean-Paul’s many charms is his light-hearted, refreshing sense of humor. A self-taught artist, Jean-Paul showcases his creative freedom by defying the current doom and gloom and developing a whole personal iconography of histrionics: Jean-Paul in a bee outfit in Mexico, Jean-Paul as William Tell posing with an orange on his head.

To top it all, his generosity and sense of the spectacular have convinced us to invite him to put together an exhibition at Galerie des Galeries. The designer needed time for his concept to mature, so January 2014
sounded about right. But one thing is certain – he will not disappoint.

Jean-Paul Lespagnard, born in Ličge in 1979, is a Belgian designer. He has presented his pręt-ŕ-porter collections for women since March of 2011. After studying Visual Arts and fashion design at Ličge’s IFAPME,
he worked with Anna Sui for two seasons and became Annemie
Verbeke’s assistant in 2005. In 2008, he participated in the 23rd edition
of the Hyčres International Festival of Fashion and Photography and won the Public’s Choice as well as the 1.2.3 Award. It was during that festival that he reached out to a broader audience and surprised everyone with
his Belgian fried potatoes’ stand themed “Jacquelines” collection. The uniqueness, newness, and sheer originality of the presentation, narrated like an ironic and fanciful fairy tale, captivated the audience. The 1.2.3 Award allowed him to design and present a capsule collection.

Later, Jean-Paul Lespagnard would go on to create his own label.
As the years passed, he perfected his style with collections that are both elegant and accessible. He has a gift for eloquently expressing an optimistic world where originality is tinged with amused irreverence towards the classical wardrobe. Fascinated by art in all its forms, be it popular or underground, Jean-Paul Lespagnard has had multiple collaborations with, in particular, Villa Noailles, French pop singer Yelle, choreographers Meg Stuart, Pierre Droulers or Gilles Jobin, as well as with magazines such as Elle or Marie-Claire.

In 2012, Arte and RTBF devoted a documentary to Jean-Paul.
His label is currently distributed in Belgium (STIJL), France (at Galeries Lafayette - Labo Créateurs, Lafayette Homme and webstore), England (Selfridges and farfetch.com), the Ukraine (Invoga), Russia (SV Group
and Very Boutique), Austria (Attak Firis), Italy (Corso Como), South Korea
(Corso Como and Stylish Blvd), Japan (Visit For) as well as China
(Duire International and I.T).

In the context of Jean-Paul Lespagnard’s TILL WE DROP exhibition at Galerie des Galeries, Mons 2015 European Capital of Culture and the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann’s cultural space have formed a
partnership.

Galerie des Galeries is a permanent venue for exhibitions. Located on the 1st floor of Lafayette Coupole (the “Dome” department store building), Galerie des Galeries space was designed to encourage visitors of the boulevard Haussmann store to discover talented young artists of today and tomorrow. The gallery’s program, organized around four exhibitions per year devoted to both French and international artists, aims to highlight the interdisciplinarity that exists between different domains of art including fashion, the visual arts and design.
