-----.INTERVIEW WITH ROGER MAVITY

Could you introduce yourself?
I'm Roger Mavity: I've spent most of my working life running an advertising agency and then a design business.
A few years ago I decided that instead of selling other people's ideas I'd make my own; I re-invented myself as
a writer and photographer. My first book, 'Life's a Pitch' was published in 2007 and my second book comes out
next year. I did a Masters degree in photography in 2007/8 and I have worked as a professional photographer
since.

Where does this passion for photography come from?
Since I was a teenager I've had a passion for all things visual - architecture, posters, furniture design, painting,
photography. I feel the passion strongly, but I don't know where it came from - neither of my parents were
interested in that kind of thing.

How long have you been a photographer?
For the last five years

What type of cameras do you shoot with?
A digital Hasselblad. And I also have a Leica M9 for when I want something more portable. With both I have a
standard lens and a range of wide lenses, but I never use a long lens.

Do you prefer analog to digital photography or vice versa. What are the advantages/ disadvantages?
I used to shoot on film, and it is a beautiful medium. But in the last few years I have been utterly seduced by
digital - it's simple and quick, the quality is now just as good as film, and I love being able to see what I shoot
as I shoot it.

How would you define your work?
I'm an art photographer, which sounds pretentious, but I simply mean that I create my own ideas, shoot them,
and sell them to people who want to hang them on their walls as art - as opposed to a commercial photographer
who takes commissions from magazines and ad agencies and works to their brief.

Tell us a little bit about your photography style, what do you think makes it different?

My work is surreal: I want to make images that are enigmatic, that make people think as well as look. But I also
want to make images that are visually striking as well as thought-provoking. A good image should give sensual
pleasure to the eye as well as cerebral stimulation to the mind.

I found your work quite interesting, not only for the use of the photographic techniques but for the concept
behind those pictures. Would you explain a little bit about what you want to express in your work?

I think life is more complex, more puzzling, less certain than we would like - and I want to express that.
But I also want the image to look stylistically remarkable as well as to raise questions. If I look at a painting
by Mondrian, it makes me feel more serene: I'd like to echo that in my work. And there is clearly a sexual
undercurrent in some of my work - but you'd have to ask a psychiatrist about that!

What do you think is the most important factor in making a good picture?
Everything matters in a photograph - the location, model, lighting, composition, photoshop, etc, all have to be
right. But that means nothing unless there is a strong central idea to start with. The idea is what makes a
great image.

How does your job as an artist influence your life?
It's the most fun of anything I do

So, what's next for you?
I've just finished my second book, so now it's back to the camera.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us.
Thank you
