-----.INTERVIEW WITH REINHARD PLANK
Bona-handpainted red
Steffel / grey

How would you describe Reinhard Plank?
From head to toe, from one extreme to another.

What was your initial attraction to hat design? What were your first steps in the field?
I wanted to frame the face of a person and give a feeling of security.
My first step was to adapt old shapes to the present, a modern interpretation.

Born in Vipiteno, in northern Italy, you moved to Vienna and graduated in 1998 at Wiens University of Applied Arts, what role did your studies play as a hat designer?
Growing up in Vipiteno and studying in Vienna influenced me in the process of designing products. I learned to model things in a playful way.

How do you believe that your origins have marked your designs?, Is there any fact that has marked your vision of Millinery?
It has marked my subconscious, giving me freedom in adherence.
I was 12years old, when I made my first hat. It was a top hat that I had made out of papier-mâché for a clown carnival costume. Ever since I have been fascinated with hats.

Tell us about your choice of materials and why did you begin to recycle hats and reshape them on your personal style…?
At first I started to use felt, because I liked its flexibility and the simpleness of reshaping it.
I started to recycle hats, so I could study the pattern, texture and shape that the previous hatter had made. By reshaping them I was able to put them into a new context and modernize them.

How important is for you the use of recycled and organic materials in your creations?, How do you choose which materials to work with?
It is always a starting point to see the origin and history of a hat by recycling them. I even recycle and reshape some of my own creations to see what I have done in the past and to remind me from where I started a shape and to interpretate it in a new way, even if that means that I am just changing the color.
The materials I choose, have to be able to adjust to a certain type, form, color and content I want to give them.

Your first hat was named "il Classico", why did you choose this name?
"Classico" was my very first felt hat and the origin for my following creations. It is a model that I have always produced and will continue so.

A hat is like a little house, a protection before the world, but also a sign of identity, a way to express yourself, do you agree?
I agree. In my point of view it emphasizes a persons character.

In 2007 you designed your first pair of shoes, What did motivate you to create a line of shoes?, what was the impetu?
With the hats I have always felt a lot of freedom and lightness, so I decided to ground my designs by adding shoes.
It helped me to have both feet planted firmly on the ground.

How do you combine these fields?
I add a little bit of lightness to the grounding.

Could you describe for us how the shoes are made? What are the materials you use in them? Is there any specific material you like especially?
As I mentioned before, I have a playful way of modeling and developing. The material I mostly use is leather. Especially horse leather is a great material, because of its minore flaws which makes it individual. The best part is the “culatta”, the rear end of the animal.

For both men and women, What are the similitudes and differences between your handmade shoes for ones and others at creative and formal level?
With all my shoes, I want to give people wellbeing and to be able to walk with more easiness through life. In both ways I am very feminine in developing and shaping the shoes, they have to wrap around the foot. For women’s shoes I tend to experiment more and give them a higher heel.

After all these years of intense work, your hats and shoes are available/ sold in some of the most selected stores worldwide, Reinhard Plank enjoys excellent reputation, What do you think your clients value more in your creations?
I believe that my clients value the uniqueness and individuality of my creations. In each piece there is a bit of soul and personality in it.

How would you describe the Reinhard Plank´s customer? Do you wear yourself some of the pieces you have made? and how does it feel?
Modern globetrotters that want to be able to have a shelter whenever and wherever they want.
I wear my own creations and it is an indescribable feeling, I believe hats bring you joy and luck in life.

If I want to acquire a pair of your shoes or if I fall in love with a hat or cap, how can I procee directly from your website? Have you got in mind to launch your own shop online for those whom already know your products?
Up until now a lot of my retailers have a selection of the products online and on the Reinhard Plank website (reinhardplank.it) there is a section called “sales” where you can find a bigger offer of shoes. We have some customers that write to us directly and ask if they can order a hat , if it is not available in any other stores. Currently we are also working on our launch of a online shop for the website that will have a selection of pieces made out of very rare and unique materials.

World is being globalized, companies and multinationals absorb everything, stopping the creative aspect and praise for the mass reproduction, What do you think is the immediate future for the independents and creatives?, could you reveal some of the main values do you consider essentials to don´t flag?
It is important to react in a more stronger way to the present and individual taste and use it for the future.

What are the three words that defines Reinhard Plank´s work?, What do you consider is your principal signature?
Organic, serenity, austerity. Riding with the flow, but not losing individuality.
