-----.INTERVIEW WITH NATASHA GUDERMANE

Could you introduce yourself?
I'd rather not. I'm rather shy...

Where does this passion for photography come from?
I think it comes from passion for image in general, and also from a difficulty I sometimes had in expressing my feelings to people in other ways,
in particular with words… Thus, when I started, photography was my way to communicate to the world.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?
I shoot with anything that comes to hand, but I have a special tenderness for slower, older, film cameras.

Do you prefer analog to digital photography or vice versa. What are the advantages/ disadvantages?
I do both, but I get more pleasure working with film. There is an element of surprise  in analog photography that is absent in digital, - a touch of chance, when life itself seems to interfere in the process of creation.
You never know from the beginning what exactly the final result will be;  curious, waiting for a magic like a child, you ask yourself if this time miracle will or won't take place. And if it happens, it is just such a delicious moment.
Digital photography in its turn is good for carefully planned mis-en-scenes, when you know precisely what you want to show and when you don't want to leave anything to chance.

How would you define your work?
I prefer not to define my work. I belive art should be more emotional experience and less intellectual. Art suffers from too much definition. People should be encouraged to look more and define less.

What was the best piece of advice you got while you were learning photography?
Never to leave your camera in a car unattended.

How would you describe your creative vision – what themes are you trying to explore in your work?
My photos question such things as femininity in the contemporary world, the search for self-identity, the desires and the attainability of satisfaction.
It is also about searching for poetry in simple things.

I think your Nude in interior project seems to be portraits of yourself, Why do you think photographers shoot themselfs nude in front of the camera?
You can call them self-portraits, but only in a figurative sense. People often remark on my physical resemblance to the model. However, it is another woman.
Here the stories of two women, the model and the photographer, are intertwined. The model,  a friend of mine was staying at my home, she was in a trouble and had nowhere to go at that moment. I proposed a photo session partly to distract her from sad thoughts.  But it was also my own narration.  On an aesthetic level my interest was to study the interaction of the cold objects of the interior and a warm body, natural and artificial, the skin against the glass, the curves against the geometrical lines, emotion against indifference.

What do you think is the most important factor in making a good picture?
The most important factor, in my opinion, is the coincidence of all of the important factors.

What can we expect to see in your current work ? Can you tell us a little bit about what the overall concept is?
In my current project, I wanted to explore whether nudity can be shot differently. Most nude photography is done by male photographers, and while amongst them there are some fantastic nude photographers, I think we can name some of the most common tendencies:   the abstract vision -  black and white, the parts of body, body as geometrical lines ( I wonder if it is not a fear of a woman that makes a photographer distance himself and see the body as part of a landscape..), the glamour vision - woman as a beautiful expensive object, sometimes accessorised by underwear and often too beautiful to be true; and so called "porno art" - crude, overly sexual photography, so popular now with book editors like Taschen.
I wanted to propose an alternative - a  feminine vision of nude photography.  Being a woman myself I am free from traps like lust, the idealisation or the fear of woman,  which permits me to focus on a personality, on a face, on the individual mystery of a person.

How does your job as an artist influence your life?
My job is my life and vice versa. I don't distinguish between these two things, as the most important part of my work happens in my mind, and my mind is always with me. Well, sometimes I lose it.. :)

So, what's next for you?
I am preparing my first monograph photo book, which will be published in 2013.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us.
