One of the main cultural characters of the Argentinian photography of last decade who take part in the creation of the group “Núcleo de Autores Fotográficos” which generates a field for discussion, criticism and research of photography as a means of expression. He uses the portrait which turns it into a vehicle of social criticism. A man worried about social matters and creating in the spectator a thought of reflection towards the present world and his own being.


Could you introduce yourself?
I am 49 years old. I was born in Santa Fe, a city in the Argentinian Pampas, and I have spent all my childhood in a village in the heart of the country. I cannot speak English very well. I have been a photographer since I was 18. I would like to devote myself to the oil painting of big fabrics. I have neither patience to make films, nor I have ideas to write scripts. I went to a Catholic boys' school. Now I am attempting to make yoga, taking care of cholesterol and drinking less alcohol.

What is the link in your work?
I am all the time thinking about what images to do. Absolutely all the time.

An influencie of American culture is reflected in your work, is it a criticism or a faithful reflection of the reality in Spanish America?
I want my work to have the texture of underdevelopment. To exorcize, through images, the violence and resentment proper of miscegenation. To be a visual journalist of the problems in Latin America.

The utilization of one religious iconography seems to be a constant, even mixed with the American Culture (Micky Mouse, for example), what do you want to reflect with this?
It is normal that this was a constant because when the conquerors came, they get off the ships with a cross and a rifle. And the audiovisual culture is the one which educates our children since the Simpsons' moral and ethics. The North American empire, the owners of the North, the owners of the banks and empires. They educate us with their TV series. I just photograph what I see.

In your work, you seem to have an important social concern, could you explain if you use photography as a means of expression to express personal concerns or they are just beautiful photographs?
The function of art is to create beauty with the mixture of internal conflicts, the anxiety proper of existence, and the artist has the function to express his opinion about his environment, his culture.

What do you hope to gain with the creation of the group “Núcleo de Autores Fotográficos?
We created it in the 80s. I assembled with several photographers to learn and interchange information. I remember that at that time Humberto Rivas, who lives in Barcelona, travelled to Buenos Aires once a year, and he showed us his photos and we showed ours. Nowadays there are organized Schools of Photography. At that time, the education was more autodidactic.

Your work in cinema has also been important, it is one more step towards the dialogue a fixed image keeps or is it just a field of technical experimentation?
I am not interested in the cinema anymore. I got tired of it. It takes me a lot of hard work to create the five or six photographs I made per year.

Your photographs are shocking regarding the message, do you agree on this?, do you think that Spanish American people are involved in a social and political field in which the rest of the people are not?
The social inequality and corruption of the governments of our contries stains my work with a bittersweet flavour.

What do you consider to be tragic in the human behavior?
Everything. People sail in big yatchs through the Mediterranean Sea in the Biennial of Venice, and while they are sunbathing in the deck with a champagne glass in their hand, they pass near the open boats of immigrants who try to arrive to the Spanish coasts fleeing from hunger. That image is a metafor in the current world.


What artists have a deeper influence in your work?
Hockney, Phillip Lorca di Corcia, the Argentinian painter Antonio Bernis.

What are you doing nowadays?
Productions in bars in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. I don't do documentary photography anymore.
