Kristina Dragomir

Kristina Dragomir Millinery is a luxury hats house based in Bucharest, Romania, which supplies exquisite boutiques in Romania, as well as locations around the world. It was founded in 2006.

HEADS NOT HATS

Kristina Dragomir is like a drop of ink in a glass of clear water. Fascinating, contagious, subtile.
She's like her hats. Or rather her hats are like her. You can't miss her in a room. She is a distinctive person.
Kristina started her studies at the University of Fine Arts. She received her M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Bucharest, in Visual Arts. She has always followed her instincts and created interesting shapes. And she has been letting her fantasy slave her hands ever since 2006. She makes beautiful heads and not hats. If there's a hat you're wearing, then it's wrong. A hat impersonates you and makes a beautiful head. What Kristina creates is an artistic expression of a people's personality. That's why you won't find two pieces alike in her exclusive portfolio and her works and designs have enjoyed continuous press coverage.

Kristina Dragomir collaborates with many respected designers such as Maria Lucia Hohan and Philippe Guilet and with notable Hollywood`s-stylist Bea Åkerlund. FTV awarded her and both theatre and cinema, call upon the expertise of Kristina Dragomir. At the same time famous international brands commissioned Kristina to create special hats for them. She also supplies exquisite boutiques in Romania, as well as stores in locations around the world including Paris, Chicago, Brescia, Kiev, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Kristina Dragomir was appointed official supplier for the Romanian Royal Family. ASR Princess Margaret has worn Kristina Dragomir hats on many high profile occasions: Royal Ascot, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or Royal Marriage in Luxembourg.

The complex manufacture procedure of her hats, the fact that she searches the world for the materials she uses and her constant adaptation to the society evolution by inventing different ways to wear the same hat, makes her creations amazing and unique. She has teary eyes when she speaks about her hats, about how complex is everything in their manufacture and that is true dedication! Everything you see and touch is handcrafted with passion.

" We often use accessories in order to distinguish ourselves from the others, and for that we use hats as a means of communication. The hat is a very important accessory for the non-verbal communication repertoire. It serves for the purpose of emphasizing one’s appearance, thus becoming an extension of his/her personality. It’s a sophisticated means of laying stress upon one’s face, at the same time being a fantastic, colourful and spicy alternative which tones it up.

The concept of artwear or wearable art from the last collections contributes to the articulation of a fantastic image of the hat, specific for the contemporary fashion. My hats convert the head into a living artifact, and the concepts of each collection contain a big number of reinterpretations of some classical moulds, by assigning them new meanings.

I have simplified the hat’s form, by reducing it to a necessary minimum. The patterns were born from the excess of ornaments, which emphasizes each piece’s architecture and this way the hat flourishes through itself. I count on the pattern’s simplicity and on the special detail, ingeniously used.

Usually when I want to impregnate a certain condition to the hat, I focus my attention to the details, which build the whole object. The detail is the most important piece of an object, contributing to the bond between concept and object. Through its visual impact succeeds in bridging between creation, possibility and interpretation. The transformation of the crown into a character is a good example of the way you can reinterpret and wring a classical pattern.

I use lots of details from the mass-consumption culture, for instance metaphors of the daily social activities or ideas, which are insignificant, but I reconsider them. The idea of the imprinted surfaces came up from the African art, more precisely from the art of tattoos printed on skin. I took this idea and transferred it to a technique applied on yielding textiles. This way the hat does not just sit on the head, but it reshapes the volumetric surfaces. Through these new technical possibilities I have elaborated other approaches of the materials, developing them tridimensional. The hat could thus be built using different kinds of trompe l’oeil".
