FIONA BENNET

-----------------
England-born and Germany-raised Fiona Bennett is a true guardian of style and elegance, a Berlin equivalent of Philip Treacy. If Germany would have a Queen, Fiona Bennett would be the officially appointed milliner.

Her designs are innovative, modern, stylish and simply "zeitgeist" capturing seducing men and women who never wore hats before trying and succeeding. Remember that gray tweed cap making Brad Pitt look like a modern version of Clark Gable back in 2007. That was the time when he also shot “The Assasination of Jesse James” – wearing the same cap again at the Deauville Film festival promoting the film. The actual star here is the cap, and it is made by Fiona Bennett.

Fiona is an institution, an experience. Arrived in Berlin when she was six, Fiona Bennett has since captured again and again the spirit of the city and transferred it into her extraordinary head pieces.

Trained milliner, Fiona Bennett was a costume designer for Vincent Paterson’s stage production of “Cabaret” and a lecturer at the University of Arts Berlin. She always saw herself as someone in between – not strictly a designers or an artist. Fiona Bennett made several stage costumes, decorations, trade show designs, and finally opened her hat salon in 1999 long before the fashion hype in Berlin was even conceived.  Her signature is obsession and love for details and extravagant ideas, her creations – not hats or head pieces, really creations! -  inspire to daydream. “A woman must be ready for a hat. She should be walking tall and exude confidence. Then, and only then, is the hat her crowning glory”, so Fiona.

Fiona Bennett is Berlin’ heritage with her passion for traditional craft of hat-making. She works with tweed, velvet and silk and decorates her creations (always a limited edition!) with feathers, flowers, rhinestones or lace. Apart from being an experienced craft woman, Fiona designs her models herself. And Fiona is not what see in her creations.  Her vision is to make a perfect frame for individuality and the beauty of wearer giving all of her experience and craft to this. “People put their heads into my hands, this is a real trust”.

The mother of a teenage boy started with headpieces for women and then, in 2007, developed her first prêt-a-porter collection and also launched her first collection for men called “The End of Discrimination”.

She is making hats for men and women for over 18 years, with high-profile clients and collaborations with Christina Aguilera, jazz and retro singer and performer Roger Cicero, heavy rock band Rammstein, performer Ben Becker and singer and songwriter Mia, and the designer Claudia Skoda under her belt.

Fiona says she needs a new dream as her own childhood dream has come through. It was not a fairytale and was not always easy, but her long-time companion, passion, did never let her down.

Born in1966 in Brighton, UK, has lived in Berlin since she was six years old. After her education as a milliner she caused quite a stir in the early 1990s with spectacular productions of head art. Along with the fashion designer Lisa D. she let Models occur in the haunted house, or crowned the musicians of Rammstein with fire hats. 1994 to 1996 she was appointed by Vivienne Westwood to be lecturer at the University of Arts in Berlin. Among others Fiona Bennett has designed hats for Wolfgang Joop and his label Wunderkind, for photo productions of Karl Lagerfeld and for Christina Aguilera's world tour in 2006. In 2009 she founded the second-line "KISS by Fiona Bennett" with her other business partner Emmy Urban. This line is now being sold in stores worldwide.

Many national and international stars adorn their heads with models of Fiona Bennett, including Brad Pitt, Katie Holmes, Ben Becker, Christiane Paul, Rufus Wainwright, Blixa Bargeld, Nadja Auermann, Vera Lehndorf, Mietze from the band MIA, Ashton Kutcher and many others.

‘The celebration of the profile’---------------------------------------------------------------

To adorn and circumscribe a persons head is probably one of the most intimate pleasures to celebrate ones visible personality.

Next to the thoughts, the eyes, the ears, the mouth and nose, the sensual relation is almost obvious.

In contrary of a mask, which hides and transforms the identity of the wearer, a hat reveals the features of the face, embraces the profile and donates the head with regal attention.

It’s a signature to the one who dares to decorate his features as well as it offers a moment of pleasureful attraction to the observer.

If one has never experienced such revelation that happens the moment you put a hat on… than a serious discovery of ones self is missing in the diary.

Fiona Bennett owns and adores this loving picture in each of us who is tempted to give in to her gifted hands and creations.

She passionately revolutionises the classic headwear through a subtle balancing act into new dimensions and unusual but highly poetic shapes.

Her mission and true intention is to invent a perfect frame to our individuality. She inspires and guides us to go further into our consciousness of expression, as far as our inner revelation and our needs to express wants to join this path.

Her prescious and most significant attribute as a millinery reserves that one will always recognize the beauty of the wearer first, than, by a second glance,  the beauty and art of the millinery in regard. As outrageously visionairy  and exquisitly designed her charming creations might be, they never overwhelm or dominate the face underneath.

Her poetry in craftmanship inspires to new experiments in ones life, they invite and lead us to begin a voyage that will guide into unexpected opportunities of self-awareness, a voyage that leads to discover 360 degrees around one aspect of being… each unique head and its singular fascination.

HER NEW STORE IN BERLIN

"I want to take people to another world!"
The hat artist Fiona Bennett has opened her new store in Berlin.
Potsdamer Strasse, Potsdamer Platz. The undisputed heart of Berlin. A vertex of memories of old East and West Berlin. The cross roads of a once divided city conjure up memories of its grand hotels and department stores and much of its history. Today filled with pedestrians and cars. Many a tourist will visit the popular sites: Mies van der Rohe‘s jewel of a museum, the New National Gallery and also attempt to visually comprehend the huge new structures of Sony and Daimler. All the while trying to recollect what it was like in its heyday, digest all they have been told about its once historic past. Few venture into the street itself to visit the riches that the Potsdamer Strasse has to offer. Marlene Dietrich once lived as a child at number 114, in a building that is already long gone, Theodor Fontane, poet extraordinaire, lived here until his death. And now there is another lovely new site to visit at Potsdamer Strasse 81 - 83.

Knowing all this and showcasing her love and enthusiasm for new and old Berlin, Fiona Bennett milliner to the avant garde- free spirits of the world has envisioned yet another transformation of Postdamer Strasse and dares to call it the center of town again. Gracing the street now is an expanse of crystalline elegance, some 20 meters in length now showcasing the street as a grand boulevard. With its expanse of storefront it beckons the passerby into its interior world, a delicate prelude to what one can invitingly experience once one steps through a mysterious opening into a new cosmos beyond. Behind the entrance door is a world in white, a gallery, open space, a forum, hundred square meters.

Fiona Bennett's creations seduce the eye. Chapaeaux balancing on racks, lightly swinging through the air on magnets. Lightweight straw models for the summer, men's hats with a touch of insouciance, flattering knitwear from the "KISS by Fiona Bennett" collection. The exhibits follow the design of the room. They shine in white, a few sparkle in copper, gold and silver. If one who prefers more color please help yourself toone of the big color films magnifiers, and imagine the hat in a new more favourable colour. All of which can be made individually on request. The Couture collection by Fiona Bennett, made of delicate gems are seemingly weightless and on the walls feathers, pearls a jewel box of enticements for the eyes. Whether a visitor would like to slender through the showroom donning this and that, or prefer private consultation. Also available to clients are private fitting rooms just perfect for the bride to be and her adoring posse.

If one is curious to see how these fantastic creations come into life one can see Ms. Bennett busily at work herself in her open studio together with her team. There where hats are drawn, shaped and sewn, feathers turned and curled, flowers fixed and modeled. Each model is created by Fiona Bennett entirely by hand in several days, it is an activity full of meditative calm and concentration, a rare relic in today's world.

Hats, adornments, are just one part of the experience that Fiona Bennett intends to offer. The shop itself is created with a tilt towards creative flexibility. Envision a space for adults to romp in. Temptation is ripe. Ms. Bennett and her partner have personally curated the selection of items for a visitor‘s amusement. Who can resist carrying home an extravagant couture model in an elegant hatbox, find accessories, designed by Fiona Bennett, limited edition of scarves, or postcard editions of her favorite photographers?
