The story of the Dimissianos leatherwear begins in 1948, when Andreas Dimissianos established his workshop on the island of Corfu. The "Dimissianos" were originally known as the specialists of the legendary “Tsarouhia”, the traditional Greek shoes that originate back in the byzantine times and are nowadays worn by the Greek presidential guard. With the growth of tourism in Corfu the family developed several lines of summer flat leather sandals which enjoyed enormous popularity among both tourists and the Greeks alike.

His legacy of shoe-making has been passed on to his son Hector Dimissianos and his wife Carolina Miller, who continue it, develop it and further explore it. What fascinates and obsesses Dimissianos & Miller are the unique qualities of leather.  Relentlessly, they are exploring its possibilities by exposing it to elements like water, sunlight, earth, air and high temperatures. This way, they deconstruct the traditional mainstream design of the Greek sandal and by pushing its limits, they create a future-oriented product, placing an enhanced importance on craftsmanship and exposing the natural qualities of the leather.

The technology they have developed has led them to the decision to actually unveil and preserve the traces of the process of making the shoes. The distinguished marks on the insole of the shoes which result in shaping and nailing the leather sole on a shoe last, became their signature – this lone and inimitable ornament which guarantees the wearer a unique and thriving passage through the stylish life. In every line they aim to push the boundaries little by little to see where it is going to take them.

Each pair of shoes brings unique marks in shaping, in the wash or in the seams. Every skin is unique in its pull, texture, flaws and hue of the colour. The natural process of tanning preserves the organic qualities of leather.

Hector Dimissianos was born in Greece. He studied photography in London and has worked for numerous magazines and galleries since 2003. His experience as a visual artist gave him a keen eye for detail and a taste for experimentation. Caroline Miller was born in Poland. At the age of 18 she designed her first collection of clothing. Soon after, she moved to Germany where she studied art history and photography, travelled in the United Kingdom and France, and met Hector. Both were working, asked for, published, and exhibited, but an even crazier experience was awaiting them: take over Hector’s family shoe-making business.

Andreas Dimissianos, Hector’s father, began to make shoes at the age of ten. He established his workshop in the Old Town of Corfu in 1948. The Dimissianos were originally known as the specialists of the legendary “Tsarouhia”, traditional Greek shoes that go back to the byzantine times and are nowadays worn by the Greek presidential guard: beautifully elaborated, handcrafted, from red and black leather with a pointy nose covered by a large woollen pompon. Coming from a background defined by fine arts and photography Caroline and Hector naturally embraced the idea to continue the family tradition of craftsmanship (after Hector’s father, approaching his 80s, mentioned that he might actually soon consider to retire). Under Andreas Dimissianos’ guidance and his severe eye they accomplished the apprenticeship in the workshop. Soon after they began to experiment with leather, and design, in a free way. And soon began to give their own vision. That vision will have a name: Dimissianos & Miller, founded in 2009.

Since then they create a really authentic product and are obsessed with the unique qualities of leather. Coming from all over Europe but carefully selected and processed in Greek tanneries, it is handled with a maximum attention, keeping its organic character, natural beauty and strength. Rejecting the notion of the common sense and refusing to accept any limitations in creation, they deconstruct the traditional mainstream look of the Greek sandal. They create a future oriented product, where the unexpected challenges their apprehension of fashion and footwear. Fully aware of the respect and sensible treatment an organic material demands, they aim at creating objects with inimitable character and a deep soul. This is why they expose and preserve all the traces of the process of handcrafting of their shoes. These distinguished marks on the insoles, which are the unique and beautiful evidence of shoemaker’s tools and treasured techniques of shaping and nailing, washing and waxing became their signature. In 2013 they are celebrating the 65th year of the workshop. This was an incentive to create a line of shoes gilded with real gold and silver leaf, adding an extra artisanal nuance to the edgy vintage look, referring to the byzantine aesthetics. Only a limited amount of 100 numbered pairs of each style and colour worldwide were made to order, as a part of the SS2014 collection.

Today their main focus is on deconstructing the traditional mainstream design of the Greek sandal, pushing its limits to create a future oriented product with an enhanced importance on craftsmanship.

The distinguished marks on the insole of each shoe ares the result of shaping and nailing the leather sole on a shoe last, and a key Dimissianos & Miller signature.

"Fashion, understood as a cycle of changing popular styles, aesthetics or practices, is indifferent to us. The sole motivation behind our works is the material, which we transform into objects: the animal’s skin.  The message that life writes on animal’s skin, encoding it in scars, irregular textures and tonalities, is overwhelming. The antinomy of the warm beauty of life and of the cold and ugly inevitability of death accompanies us in our every day work: we feel it with our hands, we smell it, and we embrace it because it reminds us of our own faith.  The organic character of the skins opens endless possibilities of shaping and forming.  Water, sunlight, earth, air and high temperatures help us to preserve the effect we want to achieve. The traditional tools that we use, these extension of our hands and instruments of our vision, inevitably leave marks on our works, our signature".
