CuriosiTIES
Expo curiosiTIES, a curious look on ties.
From the 24th of May until June the 29th
at the Fashion Museum Hasselt

For over 25 years ‘Het LABO’ brings together many designers and artists on different locations. They are invited to participate in wayward expositions and are offered the opportunity to engage in a dialogue on day-to-day life. Illustrations, thoughts, notes... and many other ways of expression are shown.

This time, they will go for the exact same approach: ‘Het LABO’ will get entangled with the Fashion Museum Hasselt. curiosiTIES pays tribute to the tie, which finds itself close to extinction nowadays. Some hundred artists, designers, graphic designers, painters, authors, fashion designers and illustrators will work the tiny piece of silk.

‘Het LABO’ brings a thematic exhibition which shows much more than just ties. You will get to see the object from many interesting and sometimes even far fetched yet overly intriguing perspectives.

Not only material, shape or type of knot, but also the identity and the use of the tie are being questioned.

Jeff Rutten only needs a metal hat rack in order to portray a tie. His HANG TIGHT might not be a tie, but it already is a collector’s item.

The difference between a tie and a shirt fades with Bart Lens’ lentecollecTIE. His work makes the decision “Going out with or without a tie?” a lot easier.

For Studio Stelt neither the tie nor the knot are safe for the materialisations of M23,960, a full scale tapestry.

Linde Hermans cuts up the shirt until nothing is left but a tie. DAS HEMD, the collaret with a series of knots can be worn on a simple T...even with the knots open.

Jo Lemmens does precisely the opposite for NOTIE. He ‘eliminates’ fabric from the shirt so the material at the back actually becomes the tie.

The Ties That Hide, a series of layered illustrations by Jenny Stieglitz, shows the ‘hidden’ reason behind the origin of the tie.

Noortje de la Haye collects striped shirts, takes a picture of them and turns these into patterns for a notebook named White shirt / write shirt. The book marker becomes the tie.

Jo Klaps uses the outlines of the tie as the start for a new font TIE_PO bold.

Het Strikje Heeft Me De Das Omgedaan (‘The bow tie became the death of me’) by Atelier NauWau confirms the impending end of the tie in a poetical coffin.

Daniel Von Weinberger takes the title of the exhibition very literally and assembles the SEA HORSE TIE from various curiosities.

To Tie or not to Tie is an exhibition in an exhibition. It is all about the results of a workshop lead by Nedda El-Asmar and Anita Evenepoel together with Hermès for the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Hermès tie.

To Tie or not to Tie contains over twenty projects from students at the fashion, jewellery design & gold- and silversmithing-section of the Academy of the Fine Arts in Antwerp (Artesis Plantijn College of Advanced Education). After Munich (Germany, March 2013), this will be the Belgian opening performance in MMH (Fashion Museum Hasselt).
